Enhancing the biological control potential of Steinernema feltiae with protection from desiccation and UV radiation

چکیده
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are obligate parasites of insects. EPNs generally have a broad host range, easily mass reared, and can kill some insects within 48 h. safe for vertebrates, plants, other non-target organisms. However, disadvantages that make them less effective against foliar insect pests such as sensitivity to desiccation, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, high temperatures. The goal this research was improve the efficacy aboveground application Steinernema feltiae by protecting desiccation UV radiation. objectives were evaluate effect chemical protectants on S. viability demonstrate enhanced control with formulated protect radiation desiccation. protectant chemicals P-amino benzoic acid (PABA), octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), Congo red, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide not toxic mealworm larvae nor EPNs. PABA, OMC, protected Infective Juveniles (IJ) exposed light 0, 4, 8 12 hrs. After hrs exposure, PABA afforded greatest protection compared chemicals. OMC provided second individually combined Barricade® fire gel, desiccant protectant, IJs added mixture. full spectra in laboratory up before introduction host. subsequent number dead filter paper or detached leaves combination treatments + Barricade lowest water controls demonstrating feltiae. survival be when applied IJ these allows greater infection mortality target pests. formulation will allow use management

Augmentation Biological Control Using the Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema Feltiae against the South American Leafminer Liriomyza Huidobrensis
Routine measures used to control the larval stages of non-statutory leafminer species in the United Kingdom rely largely on either the use of the braconid parasitoid Dacnusa sibirica Telenga and the eulophid wasp Diglyphus isaea Walker as, for example, in tomato crops, or on chemical insecticides for control in leafy salad and ornamental plants (Garthwaite and Thomas, 2001). The availability of...
متن کاملEscape of Steinernema feltiae from Alginate Capsules Containing Tomato Seeds.
The entomogenous nematode Steinernema feltiae was encapsulated in an alginate matrix containing a tomato seed. When these capsules were placed on 0.8% agar for 7 days, the seed germinated and ca. 20% of the nematodes escaped from the capsules, whereas only 0.1% escaped from capsules without seeds. When capsules containing nematodes and a seed were planted into sterilized or nonsterilized soil, ...

متن کاملGenetic Variability among Strains of the Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema feltiae.
A systematic program of genetic improvement was initiated by assessing the phenotypic variation of Steinernema feltiae strains for two traits assumed to limit efficacy: ultraviolet tolerance and host-finding ability. All of the strains assayed showed both low ultraviolet tolerance and poor host-finding ability, indicating that the likelihood of improving these traits through more extensive popu...

abstract while task-based instruction is considered as the most effective way to learn a language in the related literature, it is oversimplified on various grounds. different variables may affect how students are engaged with not only the language but also with the task itself. the present study was conducted to investigate language and task related engagement on the basis of the task typolog...
